Jose Sanchez, a 27-year-old man from the Dominican Republic, was ordered to be held without bail at the Lawrence District Court following his plea of not guilty in the murder case of Luis Mendez. The court proceeding took place after Sanchez was extradited to face accountability for the 2022 killing that transpired at a basement party on Market Street in Lawrence. The Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker reported that the victim, Mendez, was 38 at the time of his death.
Fleeing before his arrest, Sanchez remained at large until October of 2024 and was detained in the Dominican Republic until his recent return to the United States last Friday. His arraignment was overseen by the Hon. Raquel D. Ruano, where Sanchez found representation under the counsel of attorney Robin Gagne. Despite having been apprehended last year, having fled raised serious concerns among the authorities, resulting in the decision to hold Sanchez without the possibility of release until trial.
Assistant District Attorney Kelleen Forlizzi is prosecuting the case for the Commonwealth, with Jocelyn Pichardo supporting as victim/witness advocate. The effort to bring Sanchez to justice involved multiple agencies, including Lawrence Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, whom District Attorney Tucker commended for their meticulous work. The United States Department of Justice, in partnership with the United States Marshals Service, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, Essex County Sheriff Kevin Coppinger, and the Lawrence Police Department, coordinated the defendant's return to America.
"We extend our sincere gratitude to the United States Department of Justice for their collaboration and commitment to public safety, which were instrumental in the successful extradition of the defendant," as per the Office of Essex County District Attorney. Recognized, too, were the Lawrence Police Department and its Detective Kevin Nigohosian, Sergeant Christopher Cote, whose invested efforts helped cement today's court proceedings.
