A deadly vehicle collision in Las Vegas on Sunday morning has led to the 82nd traffic-related fatality in the jurisdiction of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) for the year. The fatal incident, involving multiple vehicles, occurred at the crossroads of North Eastern Avenue and East Stewart Avenue, as reported by LVMPD's official press release.
At approximately 6:24 AM last Sunday, a 2021 Toyota Camry was seen speeding east on Stewart Avenue before crashing at the intersection upon entering against a red light. Transported to the University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma, where the Camry's driver, Raul Castorena, aged 23, was in critical condition, and the Volkswagen's driver, a 42-year-old male whose name is pending notification, was with fatal injuries. Making a left turn onto Stewart Avenue, the Volkswagen Toureg, a 2005 model, found itself in the path of the speeding Toyota, resulting in a sequential collision involving two other vehicles—a 2019 Nissan Rogue and a 2023 Peterbilt Semi-truck.
The aftermath was grave. The driver of the Volkswagen perished despite medical efforts, while the injured parties from the Nissan—Sixto Hernandez-Reyes, 56, and passenger Anna Escobar-Leon, 54—were also rushed to the UMC Emergency Room, claiming injuries. The Semi-truck driver, identified as Dorian Pulliam, 61, from Mesa, AZ, escaped the incident unharmed.
As the scene unfolded, witnesses and evidence led to the Toyota driver being booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center on charges related to the fatal pile-up. With the investigation still active, the LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section continues to piece together the events that led to this tragic loss of life and the chain reaction of damage that disrupted a quiet Las Vegas morning.
