Community members gathered in Lawrenceville last Saturday, advocating for the release of journalist Mario Guevara, who was apprehended during a protest last week. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, demonstrators are not only calling for Guevara's freedom but are also pushing for an end to immigration raids nationwide. Guevara, a 47-year-old Salvadoran journalist, was detained on obstruction and traffic-related charges and subsequently transferred to an immigration holding facility after an ICE detainer was issued.

"We demand the immediate release of Mario Guevara. We think this attack against Marion Guevara is another infringement on first amendment rights," Natalie Villasala, a protester, expressed her concerns during the march, which proceeded from North Clayton Street to Nash Street. Meanwhile, Guevara's attorney asserted that he had valid work authorization and was in the process of obtaining a green card, raising questions around the charges leveled at him, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.

In further developments, Atlanta News First has obtained body camera footage of Guevara's arrest. The video depicts police officers detaining Guevara, who was warned multiple times to stay off the street, according to police records. Post-arrest, the journalist now faces new charges, including reckless driving and the unlawful use of a telecommunications device, related to an incident on May 20 when he allegedly followed unmarked law enforcement vehicles.

Mario Guevara's attorney, Giovanni Diaz, is confident in the merit of their case, despite the fresh allegations. "I think we have a good shot at demonstrating that even though he has these charges for traffic violations that that in of itself does not make him a danger to the community," Diaz told Atlanta News First. The defense is preparing a bond motion for Guevara's release, though a hearing date has yet to be set.

Speculation about the timing and motivation behind the additional charges Guevara is facing has been raised by his attorney and colleagues alike. "It’s definitely concerning that we’re seeing this now," Diaz commented on the delay in charges being filed. Alondra Madrigal, a peer at MG News, echoed these concerns. "From what I’ve been speaking to his family, it feels they’re trying to pile on more and more on him, for the way he represents the Hispanic community and he’s that voice for those who don’t have a voice," Madrigal said, highlighting the impact Guevara has had in reporting on immigration issues in the metro Atlanta area over the past two decades, as noted by the Atlanta News First.
