Last night's Michelin Guide California ceremony brought a wave of excitement to Los Angeles' fine dining scene as two restaurants earned the coveted three-star recognition for the first time. The SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center in Sacramento was the venue where Providence and Somni were bestowed the prestigious honor, joining an elite class of eateries that display exceptional cuisine at its finest.
Los Angeles, which had not previously boasted a single three-star establishment, saw its culinary landscape significantly elevated when Somni, having only been on the scene for seven months, and Providence were acknowledged by the Michelin Guide, according to Eater Los Angeles. Somni was inadvertently revealed as a victor before the official announcement when Michelin posted a now-removed video, setting an electric tone for what was to be an historic evening for the city, the Michelin Guide has been previously critiqued for its narrow focus on lavish dining experiences often not reflective of the diverse food scenes in cities like Los Angeles.
Alongside the top honors, one-star awards were presented to several Los Angeles establishments, including Mori Nozomi and Little Tokyo's Restaurant Ki, which stood out as the first Korean restaurant in Los Angeles to earn a Michelin star. Two dining spots, Komal in downtown L.A. and Rasarumah on Beverly Boulevard, were also acknowledged with Bib Gourmand awards for offering exceptional value, as per LAist. With such limited seating at some venues, securing a reservation at these now-starred restaurants will likely be a challenge for eager diners.
It's a significant victory for the Los Angeles dining scene, as Michelin resumed awarding stars in 2022 after a pandemic hiatus, having initially published guides in the city in 2008 and 2009, and then taking a decade-long break. The California Tourism Board had played a pivotal role in bringing the Michelin Guide back to Los Angeles by covering the costs of its state-wide expansion. Michelin's International Director, Gwendal Poullenec, personally delivered the good news to Somni, marking a momentous occasion for the team behind the West Hollywood dream.
With the latest awards, the conversation around Michelin's ability to fully capture the essence of a city's food offerings continues. Despite efforts to diversify their selections, there's still a sense that many local spots and impressive street vendors remain outside of their radar. Yet for the chefs and teams at Providence and Somni, the accolades serve as a testament to their hard work and dedication to culinary excellence, further positioning Los Angeles on the global gastronomic map.
