A two-alarm fire that erupted in a multi-family home on Bullfinch Street in Lynn on Sunday morning has left nine residents displaced and one person with facial burns, Boston 25 News reports. The Lynn Fire Department arrived to find smoke billowing from the building and neighbors assisting in the evacuation, including children, through an open window.
According to firefighters at the scene, the structure may be too damaged for repair. Moreover, some nearby homes have also sustained minor damage. As the fire intensified, residents from other homes were forced to leave for their safety. In the chaos, one resident suffered injuries.
CBS Boston's coverage of the incident includes an account by Don Hawkins, a local who witnessed the fire: "So, I knocked on their door, told them to get out of the house; hurry up. Started yelling, 'Everybody get out of the house.' Ran back inside, got my kids, went out the back door. That's it. Called 911," he recounted. Hawkins claimed there were at least 10 people inside the home when the fire started, and though his own residence suffered damage, he expressed relief that his family was unharmed.
Fire crews battled for several hours to contain the flames, cutting into parts of the home to prevent a potential collapse. "As soon as I seen the flames, I started to alert as many people as I could. 'Fire! Fire! Get out of the house.' Bang on their door. It was pretty bad, though. The whole back porch was engulfed a little bit," Hawkins told CBS Boston. While the immediate danger has passed, the fire's cause remains under investigation.
