In a sobering announcement from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, D.A. Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has revealed the indictment of Miguel Jiraud over a harrowing incident on Randall's Island on May 16. Jiraud, 30, faces grave charges, including Attempted Murder and Robbery, for an unprovoked attack on a 44-year-old woman who was simply riding her bike home. The brutal assault has left the victim with severe cognitive impairments, a stark reminder of the random violence that can shatter lives. To piece together the account of the night, the Manhattan DA's Office has leaned heavily on court documents and police reports.
According to the details shared by D.A. Bragg, the victim was on her way home from work at a museum in Harlem when Jiraud allegedly launched into to attack her without any apparent reason. Following this vicious assault, he is accused to have stolen and subsequently disposed of her bike in the Harlem River. The indictment, obtained by the Manhattan DA's Office, contains chilling allegations that the very next morning, it was Jiraud who made the call to 911 pretending to have found the victim during an early morning walk.
First responders arrived to a grim scene: the victim unresponsive, with severe injuries that were reflective of the violence inflicted upon her. Her battered state necessitated immediate hospitalization at Elmhurst Hospital, where she required multiple surgeries to address the grave damage to her skull and brain. Assistant D.A.s Joshua Steinglass and Christina Awad of Trial Bureau 40 are leading the prosecution of the case, under higher-ups Assistant D.A. Shawn McMahon and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo. The law enforcement community, particularly NYPD detectives Anthony Ippolito and Charles Freitag, as well as the Harbor Scuba Team, received specific thanks from D.A. Bragg for their roles in the investigation.
An air of resolve was present in the statement provided by the Manhattan District Attorney, "This conduct is abhorrent. I hope she continues to recover from this terrifying assault, and I want to assure New Yorkers that we will ensure accountability for those who commit such acts of violence," as per the announcement from the Manhattan DA's Office.
