Mankato residents looking to beat the heat this weekend at Tourtellotte Pool will need to splash around elsewhere. In a social media post by the City of Mankato, Minnesota Government, it was announced that the popular swimming spot will be temporarily out of commission starting 1 p.m. on Friday, June 20, through Sunday, June 22, inclusively.
The closure is due to accommodate the season's first MANTAS swim meet, marking one of the many booked events that see local facilities pivoted from public amenity to competitive grounds. Folks planning a leisurely dip or family outing will have to put those plans on hold, as the pool isn't set to reopen for regular public hours until Monday, June 23. The city's message, posted on Wednesday, went on to note that "Tourtellotte Pool will temporarily close to the public this weekend."
While alternative options such as the splash pad at Sibley Park or Hiniker Pond may not exactly replicate the pool experience, they offer viable substitutes for water enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay cool during the pool's competitive reprieve. Notwithstanding the hassle for some residents, swim meets like this are a cornerstone of local youth sports, fostering competitive spirit and community engagement.
With the weather heating up, the community is encouraged to bookmark the city's social media pages for the latest updates on pool schedules and availability. They'll come in handy for avoiding another unplanned dry spell during the simmering summer months. The Mankato city officials earnestly hope patrons will take these disruptions in stride, supporting the young swimmers as they take their marks. After all, today's local competitors could be tomorrow's Olympians, and every race counts. For now, however, water wings and weekend plans will have to float elsewhere.
