As summer hits its stride and the days grow longer, so does the shadow cast by vehicle theft across the nation. The Maryland State Police, in collaboration with the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council (MVTPC), has declared July as National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, a time to reflect on and take action against the persistent threat to our automobiles. According to a report from the Maryland State Police, a vehicle is stolen roughly every 22 minutes in Maryland, with the majority of those instances involving unlocked vehicles.
Data sheds light on a disturbing trend: during the warmer months, the rate of vehicle thefts sharply intensifies, urging motorists not to believe their property is safe when unattended. Disturbingly enough, in half of the theft cases, keys or fobs were left inside the vehicle invitingly. The MVTPC has been diligently working to reverse this tide by partnering with local enforcement and community groups to enhance awareness and prevention measures.
To effectively shield your vehicle from becoming the next statistic, the MVTPC urges adopting several precautionary habits. Among these recommendations is always to ensure that you take your keys or fob with you and to lock all windows and doors when your car is parked. Choosing well-lit areas for parking, removing all valuables from sight, and using anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks or OBD port locks are also crucial deterrents. The council's outlined steps are straightforward yet, time and again, prove to be the most effective means of combating this pervasive crime. By following these tips, you can reduce the likelihood of your daily commute being disrupted by theft.
