In a case that has drawn attention to the severe issue of sexual assault in the hospitality industry, the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office has reported a Massachusetts man, Osman Mukhammadiyev, conviction by a jury. Mukhammadiyev, aged 32, was found guilty of the forcible rape and false imprisonment of a hotel clerk in Turlock. As announced via a Facebook post from the Stanislaus County District Attorney, the suspect could spend almost nine years behind bars, as per California law.

According to the details released by Jeff Laugero, the Stanislaus County District Attorney, the incident leading to Mukhammadiyev's conviction occurred on May 6, 2022. Misplaced in his hotel room at the Days Inn Hotel, the suspect deployed a ruse, pretending to be in need of assistance with a malfunctioning television and internet connection to lure the front desk clerk into his room. Once the victim entered the room on the alleged pretense of fixing the issues, she was forcibly pushed onto the bed and sexually assaulted by Mukhammadiyev.

The Stanislaus County District Attorney said the victim’s strength was key in the case. She fought off the attacker and quickly called 911, leading to a fast response from police. Officers found the suspect near the hotel lobby, where the victim had locked herself while waiting for help. During the investigation, Mukhammadiyev admitted to calling the clerk to his room and touching her hips but denied sexually assaulting her.

The evidence against Mukhammadiyev was clear and undeniable. A sexual assault exam and DNA testing confirmed the assault, helping secure a conviction. Deputy District Attorney Vita Palazuelos led the prosecution, and the Turlock Police Department was praised for their quick investigation and arrest.
