An early morning fire tore through a Menifee tire shop before spreading to neighboring properties, causing extensive damage and displacing residents. According to a NBC Los Angeles report, the blaze began around 2:00 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway 74 and 2nd Street, quickly engulfing the tire shop in flames that were visible for miles. "You could see the flames. They were 20 feet high. It was bad," Miguel Villavicencio, a local resident whose family restaurant suffered water and smoke damage, told NBC Los Angeles.
The inferno required the response of 13 fire engines and over 60 firefighters to contain it, according to CalFire officials. "The fire was substantial for the small area. It was packed tight," said CalFire Battalion Chief Mike Ballinger in a statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles. Damage extended to an RV, which was destroyed, and two others that were damaged, alongside another property housing three families. The tire shop owner has yet to report the number of cars present at the time of the fire's ignition, and thankfully, there were no injuries reported.
CBS News Los Angeles detailed the spread of the fire to four nearby structures, including a commercial building and a home. Firefighters finally achieved containment before 7:00 a.m., and the Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced families. The status of several damaged properties was not immediately clear, and the cause of the fire still remains under investigation.
Compounding the situation, power lines were impacted, prompting the arrival of Southern California Edison crews to address electrical hazards. An environmental health response was likewise initiated due to toxic smoke from the burning tires, as noted in an update by KTLA. While the immediate dangers have been addressed, the long-term impact of such a hazmat situation on the local environment and community health has yet to be assessed. As for moment, no injuries have been reported in the wake of the destructive fire.
