In an effort to promote public safety and reduce gun violence, the Maui Police Department, in partnership with other governmental agencies, is hosting a Gun Buyback Event in Kahului. Set to take place at the Maui County Service Center next Saturday, the event offers an anonymous avenue for individuals to dispose of unwanted firearms with "no questions asked and no identification required," as per the information shared on the Maui Police Department's Facebook page.
Participants are instructed to transport firearms unloaded and contained securely in a vehicle's trunk, where law enforcement will retrieve them while individuals stay in their vehicles. The initiative features a compensation scheme where "participants will receive" a $100 gift card for various firearms and accessories, including handguns and rifles, while a $200 gift card is offered for automatic and assault-type firearms, as well as ghost guns. Despite individuals being allowed to turn in an unlimited number of firearms, a cap of three gift cards per person has been put in place by the organizers.
There are a few restrictions to keep in mind; ammunition will not be accepted, licensed firearm dealers and law enforcement personnel cannot participate, and officials "reserve the right to refuse the acceptance of any firearm or the issuance of a gift card at their discretion." Moreover, to encourage safe handling of the firearms that remain within the community, free gun locks will be distributed for as long as supplies last. Inquiries can be directed to the Wailuku Community Policing Unit at 808-270-6597 for further clarification on the event's policies and guidelines.
This gun buyback program aligns with broader community safety efforts to mitigate the risks associated with gun ownership, particularly in domestic spaces. Interested parties are encouraged to participate, understanding that the offer to exchange firearms for gift cards is part of a wider strategy aimed at "removing unwanted and potentially dangerous weapons from homes and streets."
