Attention, drivers in Maui: prepare for some nightly disruptions next week as the Hawaii Department of Transportation has announced the resumption of modular home transports to assist wildfire survivors. These large structures will be moving from Kahului to a housing site in Lahaina, which will likely lead to traffic delays. The hauling is scheduled to run from 9 p.m. to just before midnight, starting on Tuesday, June 10, through Thursday, June 12, and will repeat from June 17 to June 19, as per the Hawaii Department of Transportation's notice.
The route for these oversized loads kicks off near the Kahului small boat ramp; they'll then snake their way along several highways—Kahului Beach Road, Kaʻahumanu Avenue, Hāna Highway, Elmer F. Cravalho Way, and eventually onto Kūihelani Highway, the size of the modular units may cause slowdowns and stops for traffic, causing slight to moderate delays along these roads, so it's wise for motorists to plan ahead, The final stretch will take them on Honoapiʻilani Highway right into Lahaina, ending up at the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site that sits mauka, or inland, of the highway, as reported by the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Hawaii Department of Transportation's social media pages on Facebook and X are the go-to spots for any updates or schedule changes regarding the transport. Travelers along the route are advised to watch out for and adhere to all traffic signs and directions from controllers, especially since traffic delays are a given when a caravan of homes hits the road, as per the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
