Drivers in Eaton County should prepare for route changes starting on Friday, as road work begins on I-96 near Lansing. The Michigan Department of Transportation will close ramps and lanes at the I-96/Lansing Road interchange as part of a three-year infrastructure project. The project, which totals $44 million, began in 2023. While most work was completed in 2023 and 2024, road work and crossover removal are scheduled for this year and may cause delays.
Michigan Department of Transportation announced that reconstruction work on I-96 will include improvements to the eastbound and westbound bridges over several local roads. A lane closure on eastbound I-96 between Lansing Road and Creyts Road is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday to allow crews to work safely. The project is part of the Rebuilding Michigan program, which focuses on repairing state highways and bridges. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said, “Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely.” Michigan Department of Transportation says nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges have been repaired or replaced during her administration.
Starting June 9, several road closures will take place near I-96 and last until August 1. The northbound Lansing Road ramp to eastbound I-96 and the westbound I-96 Exit 98B to northbound Lansing Road will be closed. Billwood Highway will also be closed in both directions under I-96. Detours will be posted, and drivers should plan for extra travel time. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the project is expected to support 532 jobs.
