If you're a Mecklenburg County homeowner feeling the pinch of rising home costs, some relief may be on the horizon. Beginning next Tuesday, the Helping Out Mecklenburg homeowners with Economic Support (HOMES) program will once again be offering economic assistance grants, and this year the potential savings could be substantial. Over a 10-minute application, homeowners may find themselves pocketing an extra $1,000 or more.
The HOMES program is designed to help quickly provide up to $650 to qualifying homeowners. And if you're residing within the Town of Davidson, that support could swell with an additional grant up to $534. To qualify, make sure to have lived in your home for at least three years, meet the income thresholds set for your household, and have managed to not more than one delinquent tax bill in the past three years to fall behind on.
When it comes time to apply, be ready to present your income verification documents from 2024. This might include W2s, W4s, 1099s, and SSI forms. Whether your mortgage company pays your property taxes through escrow doesn't exclude you; you can still be eligible for the program. The grant application is available online at MeckNC.gov/4HOMES, and you'll want to act fast: Applications are processed first-come, first-served until the well runs dry.
You have options for how to submit your application, too. You can choose to do it online, by email, by traditional mail, or even in person at a Community Resource Center. Just be sure to mark your calendar for the deadline: November 21 is the last day to apply. Every little bit helps in these times, and a grant like HOMES might just provide the buffer necessary to keep afloat, or even get slightly ahead.
Remember, while the application portal opens in just a week, funds are limited. Do not wait to submit your paperwork and potentially miss out on some much needed financial aid. For more information and to prepare your documents, make sure to visit the official HOMES program page.
