Memphis residents, brace yourselves for another sweltering day as the National Weather Service in Memphis has extended a heat advisory until 9 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The advisory, which covers a broad swath including portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee, warns of heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees.
With the high humidity and soaring temperatures being the culprits, the NWS cautions that the risk of heat illnesses increases under these conditions. Whilst temperatures are expected to peak at around 95 degrees today, it's the heat index—a measure that combines air temperature with relative humidity.
"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," according to the Heat Advisory. These safety measures are intended to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, urging residents to take proper precautions to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke during this period of extreme temperatures. Air-conditioned public places such as malls and libraries are expected to experience increased foot traffic as people seek relief from the oppressive heat.
As the week continues, relief remains scarce, with the forecast showing persistent sunny skies and daytime highs lingering in the mid-90s. Nighttime temperatures will offer only slight respite, dipping to the mid-70s. Nonetheless, the heat remains taxing, particularly for individuals lacking access to cooling resources or those working outside.
The NWS urges the public to remain alert and monitor individuals most susceptible to heat-related illnesses, including older adults, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. As temperatures continue to rise, community awareness and preventive actions are emphasized to reduce the impact of the extreme heat affecting the region.
