Get ready to dust off those dancing shoes, seniors of Shelby County. Tomorrow, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., The Kent at 61 Keel Avenue in Memphis will be alive with the sound of music and laughter as it hosts the 4th Annual Senior Prom. This event isn't just some dance—it's a robust initiative by ShelbyCares and a collaborative effort with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine to deliver essential health and social services to the underprivileged in the community, according to the Shelby County Mayor’s Office.
This gala isn’t simply a call to dance; it's a poignant reminder of the vibrance and vigor that are often invisibly carried by those who have weathered more than 62 winters. It is a testament to their enduring spirit that outshines the passing of years. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris was quoted saying, "In Shelby County, we are deeply committed to creating an inclusive environment where our seniors are not only welcomed, but truly celebrated," in an announcement obtained by the Shelby County Mayor’s Office website. In light of Men’s Health Awareness Month, Mayor Harris also encouraged more men to participate in this year's festivities.
Classic tunes and snazzy dressing up aside, the Senior Prom aims to actively encourage a culture of health-consciousness and social engagement among the elders. The evening will feature live music from the Garry Goin Group, DJ Stan Bell's cool beats, and mocktails by Candy Bar. There will also be a dance competition to crown a Senior Prom King and Queen, as reported by the Shelby County Mayor’s Office.
Authorities like Blaire Benavides, Director of the Shelby County Mayor’s Office of Innovation & Strategic Communications, has recognized the deep connection this event fosters among its attendees. "The 2025 Senior Prom is a testament to the lively spirit of our senior community. This event is about encouraging our senior population to stay active, create meaningful connections, and learn valuable health information," Benavides stated in the Shelby County Mayor’s Office press release.
The Senior Prom isn’t just about fun—it also helps share important health information. Groups like the Shelby County Health Department, Oak Street Health, and the Aging Commission of the Mid-South will be there to give seniors helpful resources. Dr. Jim E. Bailey said the prom is a joyful event that brings seniors together to connect, share stories, and dance. He added that it’s not just entertaining—it also supports health and wellbeing, as per the Shelby County Mayor’s Office.
