According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the inaugural edition will be unveiled on November 3 at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina, signifying a notable shift in focus for the dining guide that first set its sights on Atlanta in 2023.
Despite growing appreciation for Southern cuisine, the new guide's coverage will be limited to metro Atlanta, representing the entirety of Georgia. As reported by Rough Draft Atlanta, this limitation sidelines other acclaimed Georgia dining hubs such as Macon, Athens, and Savannah. The reasoning behind this decision, appears rooted in the tourism partnership dynamics, between Travel South USA and Michelin, and the influential role that the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau has played in this process.
The guide integrates the Atlanta selection with establishments from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee, forging a comprehensive view of Southern culinary excellence. “The MICHELIN Guide Atlanta launched in 2023, as it proved to be a culturally diverse city with a vibrant culinary scene. Beginning in 2025, the Atlanta MICHELIN Guide selection will be included in the American South regional edition,” a Michelin representative told Rough Draft Atlanta.
The spotlight event will not only chart culinary territories but also toast notable achievements with awards for exceptional cocktails, outstanding sommelier, outstanding service, and a young chef category. Anticipation ripples through the community, as invites to the prestigious ceremony will be dispatched later this fall. However, the integration into a regional guide raises questions about the fate of current Atlanta listings – some could sink from prominence, while others continue to bask in the glow of Michelin recognition.
At the core of the Michelin rating system lies a stringent evaluation process by anonymous inspectors, who assess eligible restaurants against a five-criterion metric, looking for consistency and flair in both food and service. Metro Atlanta's dining scene already boasts nine one-star establishments according to the 2024 MICHELIN Guide. With more than 12,000 dining establishments to choose from in the region, the inclusion in the Guide is a nod to excellence, setting apart over 17,000 renowned global establishments within MICHELIN's constellation of culinary stars.
