A multi-city robbery spree targeting Aldi grocery stores across Michigan has led to multiple felony charges for 34-year-old Kaleb Michael Shaffer. Arrested on June 4 in Rapid City, South Dakota, Shaffer faces a series of armed robbery charges in connection with a pattern of holdups at the discount food retailer, as reported by WZZM13.
The alleged series of robberies initiated on December 10, 2024, with the suspect accused of asking to speak with managers before implying that he was armed and then demanding money. In what appeared to be a calculated method, Shaffer is purported to have repeated this tactic at various stores across the state, according to WOOD TV. Post investigation, law enforcement linked Shaffer to the crimes, which led to his extradition back to Michigan to squarely face the allegations against him.
Details from MLive note that investigators leveraged the aid of three other police jurisdictions and Aldi Corporate to identify Shaffer as a suspect. They focused on a string of robberies where the suspect's methods were consistent across all cases. The initial authorization for two counts of felony armed robbery was issued on June 2, leading to Shaffer's arraignment on June 20 in Kalamazoo County District Court.
After his arrest without bond, Shaffer was slated to also face armed robbery charges in Meridian Township from a January 5 incident. As more cases are to be reviewed, two additional Michigan prosecutors are contemplating filing further charges.
