The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD), an institution with a century and a half of dedicated service under its belt, has turned to social media to reflect on its storied past. As part of a year-long commemoration, the department is bringing historical moments to the forefront, showcasing instances that shaped their refined approaches to serving the community.
Recalling a pair of fires on June 15—separated by eight decades yet linked by the magnitude of their alarms—the MFD honors the anniversaries of two significant blazes through posts on their official Facebook page. According to the social media post shared by the Milwaukee Fire Department, on this day in 1926, a 3rd alarm fire struck at the Hartman Furniture Company, located at 286-90 W. Water Street. Flash forward to June 15, 2006, and another 3rd alarm fire raged through two dwellings at 2006-12 N. 37th Street.
These retrospectives serve not just as a history lesson, but as reminders of the evolving challenges the Milwaukee Fire Department has faced and overcome over the years. By engaging with the public through these digital archives, the MFD showcases not only the bravery and resilience of its firefighters but also the community's ongoing reliance on their courageous service.
In collaboration with the Milwaukee Fire Historical Society & Fire Museum, the MFD is eager to share more from its archives. The department encourages residents to follow their Facebook page for a daily dose of history.
