The Milwaukee Fire Department is celebrating a monumental 150-year anniversary of dedicated service to their community. As part of the commemorations, they're showcasing significant moments from their storied past. According to a recent social media post, the department will share historical events throughout the year.
The department is reviewing significant historical events, such as the general alarm fire on June 9, 1885, at the Jacob Litt Dime Museum, which represented one of numerous challenges encountered. The record further includes other incidents on the same date, including the 3rd alarm fire on June 9, 1905, at Oregon & Water Streets, and the 2nd alarm fire on June 9, 1917, at the Federal Asbestos Company. These instances illustrate the institution's development and enduring strength in its role in Milwaukee's safety.
The department's 150-year history additionally demonstrates its responses to changing crises, evidenced by more recent events. For example, on June 9, 1985, a 2nd alarm fire at State Fair Park necessitated aid from West Allis firefighters, highlighting inter-agency collaboration. Furthermore, on June 9, 2016, a 2nd alarm fire at two dwellings on N. 24th Street occurred, representing the ongoing service provided by fire department personnel.
The Milwaukee Fire Historical Society & Fire Museum supported this tribute by providing the historical narrative and an accompanying image for the department's online review.
