The Milwaukee Fire Department is celebrating a milestone this year, marking 150 years of dedicated service to the community. In honor of their sesquicentennial, the department has taken to social media to share poignant stories and notable moments from their long-standing history. One such reflection was posted on their official Facebook page, where they highlighted historic fires that occurred on June 2 throughout the decades, ranging from a 3rd alarm blaze at the Bahn-Frei Dance Hall in 1944, to a 2nd alarm fire engulfing wood pallets in 2020. The page promises more retrospectives as the year progresses, inviting the community to regularly engage with their heroic past.
Documenting the department's evolution and the fires that have punctuated it, the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Milwaukee Fire Historical Society & Fire Museum are collaborating to dig through the archives; amongst the recollections shared were the fires on June 2, 1946 at an apartment building on N.13th Street, three dwellings on N. 39th Street caught in a 4th alarm fire in 1997, and the George Peck rowhouse incident on N. Farwell Avenue in 1999. The repository of stories serves not only as a historical ledger but also as an homage to the enduring spirit and bravery of Milwaukee's firefighters.
As the posts unfurl, they paint a canvas of a city shielded by its firefighters' unwavering commitment to serve. Milwaukee's Fire Department is utilizing this commemorative year to not only look back but also, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department Facebook post, consider the lessons learned and how they have sculpted the department's modern approach to firefighting and community safety. This reflective endeavor roots the department firmly within the fabric of Milwaukee's history while simultaneously propelling it into future challenges.
