A Milwaukee police officer has been wounded in a shooting that occurred on Thursday evening near 46th and Hampton. FOX6Now reports the incident happened as Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) officers were responding to the area around 6:45 p.m. last Thursday. Witnesses claim they saw two people brandishing firearms, which led to a foot chase by the officers.

During the pursuit, a 30-year-old officer, with over seven years of service, attempted to apprehend one suspect in an alley. CBS 58 details that the officer, who was part of district seven, ordered the suspect to drop their gun, but the suspect allegedly refused. This refusal quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire, leading both the officer and the suspect to become injured. The second suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The 39-year-old suspect involved in the shooting was transported to a local hospital to treat non-fatal injuries, as was the officer. The other man, a 19-year-old, was also arrested, and two ghost guns were recovered from the scene, notes WISN. Police have yet to confirm which party fired first.

According to WISN, the officer is now placed on administrative duty, which "is routine for officer-involved shootings," per department policy. As for the suspects, charges are to be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit has been enlisted to thoroughly investigate the shooting incident to ascertain all pertinent details and to fully determine the events that transpired that evening.
