In a recent showcase of technological proficiency, the Minneapolis Police Department heralded the successes of its Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) system in tracking down a stolen car. A post on the department's Facebook page provided the details of the incident, which transpired near the intersection of 9th Street and 1st Avenue South.
The ALPR alerted officers to a vehicle that was reported stolen, and upon pulling the driver over, the individual at the helm claimed ownership but failed to deliver any tangible proof of the claim, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. Instead, what was offered as evidence was a photograph of an insurance policy that, upon verification, turned out to be invalid. The recovery of stolen cars is a critical aspect of the MPD’s efforts to mitigate crime, and their quick response in this case allowed for prompt action.
Within this recovered vehicle sat a baby, secure in the back seat. Officers, acting with due concern for the child's welfare, made certain that the baby was safely transferred to relatives. Once the child's safety was ensured, the driver was placed under arrest. "Excellent work by our officers for recovering the stolen vehicle and making sure this young child was safely cared for," the Minneapolis Police Department stated.
