A somber scene unfolded in northeast Charlotte yesterday, where a mother and her child were found deceased in a hotel room, now a subject of police investigation. According to WBTV, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) was called to assist Medic around noon at a location that was once used for affordable housing initiatives for the homeless. The building on Equipment Drive, near West Sugar Creek Road, was recently leased to HELP, an organization aiming to transform the site into a substance abuse recovery program. Cemeka Mitchem, housing director for HELP, reportedly found the victims and suggested they might have been deceased for weeks.
Major Jesus Rendon of CMPD, in an interview obtained by WCNC Charlotte, stated there is currently no evidence pointing towards criminal activity, but the investigation remains in its early stages. "Right now, we don't have any reason to believe there's any criminal activity afoot," Rendon said. As per protocol when a child's death is involved, CMPD's homicide unit was to thoroughly investigate the scene. The Medical Examiner's Office has also been involved to determine the cause of death, although no speculation has been made on this matter publicly.
Further complicating the narrative is a history of eviction notices and allegations of aggressive behavior by the property's current lessee, Cedric Dean. WCNC Charlotte reported that Dean previously attempted to offer money to residents who were part of Heal Charlotte, the former tenants, to vacate the rooms. Dean was arrested on May 12 with allegations of forcing himself into the room of the woman and her child now found deceased. "The day the city chose to put me in jail, that's the day they failed this family," Dean asserted, claiming the city's actions prevented proper oversight of the well-being of those in the facility.
Detectives, when called on noon to assist MEDIC, did not suspect any foul play initially, according to a statement by CMPD in an article by WSOCTV.
