In the scheme of modern-day robberies, the one with no guns—only sweet words and promises—is perhaps the most insidious. In this vein, a federal court has just dispatched justice in the form of a 42-month prison sentence for Otaniyen Iduozee, a Nigerian citizen, for his role in a romance scam that fleeced unsuspecting victims. As noted by a recent press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Iduozee had previously pled guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

According to the press release, these schemes typically ensnare the elderly or vulnerable Americans by simulating romantic intentions to gain trust and ultimately, large sums of money. In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Richard Frohling said per the U.S. Attorney's Office, “Individuals and groups who engage in these types of schemes not only cause financial loss but also shatter the trust of their victims, inflicting multiple layers of trauma and harm.” Iduozee's role, having caught by their affections’ victims, was laundering the ill-gotten gains, siphoning millions of dollars through fraudulent bank accounts into overseas accounts.

The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations, unveiled the extent of the damage. Money from these romance swindles, once extracted through false pretenses, circulates through a financial labyrinth that obscures its origins—Iduozee was found deep within this maze, as he remitted the victims’ funds back to Nigeria. Chief United States District Court Judge Pamela Pepper, at the sentencing event, underscored the lasting damage inflicted by these fraud schemes, discussing the "widespread nature" and "devastating impact" they have on victims, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
