
On Sunday, a person was shot at a car meetup in the parking lot of The Shops at Centerpoint in Grand Rapids. Police said the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. and the victim had non-life-threatening injuries. The Grand Rapids Police Department said similar events have happened at this location before. Around 1 a.m. on the same day, there were reports of erratic driving near Michigan Street and Monroe Avenue, according to FOX 17.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the department is expanding efforts to address street takeovers, which have raised safety concerns in the city. “Preventing violence is one of our primary goals, and addressing these street takeovers goes hand in hand with that. So we will be out looking for these groups,” Winstrom told WZZM 13. The number of incidents has declined since 2024, but the gatherings remain difficult to monitor due to how quickly they are organized and disbanded.
