In an early morning confrontation that rattled the neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, NYPD officers discharged their weapons at a group of suspects they allege were in the act of stealing vehicles from a luxury car dealership. According to ABC7NY, the incident unfolded at around 6 a.m. today, when 10 individuals reportedly began to break into cars at the dealership situated at 33rd Avenue and Prince Street.
These suspects, upon attempting to quickly flee the scene in a black BMW, were confronted by police, leading to the discharge of firearms. A chaotic pursuit ensued, with the suspects believed to head potentially towards the Bronx. In an effort to effectively cordon off the scene, police blocked intersections near the dealership and also a corner on Farrington Street and 32nd Avenue. The situation was reminiscent of a high-octane film, as described by authorities, with suspects driving on sidewalks and into each other.
As the investigation continued, officers were seen canvasing for evidence in the backyards of nearby homes. A local business owner of 10 years expressed to ABC7NY his shaken belief in security, "Last week there was a robbery on Main Street and there was a helicopter that tried to chase them. This week this is happening. So, it's a little scary to me," he said. The NYPD later confirmed that one officer suffered tinnitus during the incident and that hospitals were being checked for any suspects potentially wounded by the gunfire.
While the initial reports suggested chaos, FOX 5 NY narrows down the event details, indicating that the shots were fired as the suspects, reportedly armed, tried to drive away towards the officers. These officers, positioned on foot, discharged their weapons to presumably stop the forward momentum of the vehicles. The confrontation reportedly led to the recovery of four out of the five stolen vehicles, with no injuries reported aside from an officer taken to the hospital for evaluation.
A worker at the dealership shared with FOX 5 NY that the automobiles in question were not merely in for repairs but were, in fact, upscale cars for sale—a detail that underscores the gravity of the heist. The exact circumstances around the discharge of police firearms remain yet to be fully disclosed, with no confirmation on whether any of the suspects were hit by the gunfire, nor any word on additional arrests beyond the two individuals taken into custody, one of whom was accused of driving at the officers.
