Motorists on Oʻahu can breathe a little easier now that the Wilson Tunnel lights are back on. After a brief period of darkness, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced the completion of necessary repairs and the restoration of lighting on Thursday. The tunnel's illumination system had been shut down since June 4 to allow the Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) to perform what seemed to be a precarious fix to two overhead transmission circuits damaged in the Koʻolau mountains.

Defying initial estimates, HECO managed to safely and quickly complete the work, restoring full function in less than the projected two weeks. This comes as a relief to those who regularly traverse the tunnel and had to carefully navigate the gloom that overtook its expanse during the outage. In a statement obtained by the HDOT, they "appreciates the efforts HECO made to expedite the repairs and coordinate with HDOT staff."

The impact of the tunnel's downtime was mitigated by the patience and caution of Windward drivers, who adapted to the temporary absence of light. Commuters were advised of the outage beforehand and signs were posted to ensure the safety of those passing through.
