Oklahoma State Representative Michelle McCane has added another accolade to her collection with the 2025 Oklahoma Library Association's (OLA) Bill Lowry Library Champion Award. An advocate for libraries and former school librarian herself, McCane was recognized by the OLA for her steadfast support of library services in her community. "I am honored and humbled to be named a Bill Lowry Library Champion by the Oklahoma Library Association!” McCane said, in a statement published by the Oklahoma House website.
McCane’s history as a "library kid" and a professional in the field weaves a narrative of genuine dedication to ensuring access to literature and resources for the youth. “Libraries, whether in our neighborhoods or inside our schools, are essential. They’re where our kids find knowledge, safety, imagination, and truth," McCane's statement expresses, encapsulating the core of her advocacy efforts. The representative's involvement goes beyond mere support, as she has cooperated with the Oklahoma School Librarians (OKSL) and OLA to advance policies fostering the growth and strengthening of library infrastructures, according to the Oklahoma House.
McCane's engagement with education extends into her past roles, having been named Teacher of the Year at McLain High School for the 2020-2021 academic year and at Traice Academy for 2023-2024, exhibiting a consistent track record of contributions to boosting student outcomes. Her work has earned her respect, and the various honors she has received are a testament to her impact on public education and her dedication to instilling a love for learning in students.
According to the Oklahoma House, emphasizing the shared nature of the achievement, McCane remarked, “This award isn’t just for me—it’s for every educator, every librarian, and every student who knows that stories change lives." The spirit with which McCane acknowledges the collaborative effort spotlights a community working in unison for the betterment of educational accessibility. Further, this recent acknowledgment appears to be a catalyst for McCane, whose parting words in her statement, “Let’s keep fighting for the future our communities deserve,” serve as a rallying cry for continued support and advocacy of libraries in Oklahoma.
