A grim sequence unfolded at a Midtown bar in Memphis, where a shooting left one man dead and another injured, as per local authorities. In the early morning hours around 1:48 a.m., Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers were called to Canvas at 1737 Madison Avenue. According to a report by FOX13 Memphis, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds, one of whom became deceased at the scene and the other transported to Regional One Health in non-critical condition.
The incident, as found by officers, appeared to stem from an argument inside the bar, leading one man to shoot another. Subsequently, a third man shot the individual responsible for the initial gunfire, based on preliminary details shared by the MPD and reported by Action News 5. The name of the man, dead after the shooting at the bar, has not been released pending family notification.
Local residents have expressed ongoing concerns about the establishment. Jeff Bramlett, a nearby resident, detailed to Action News 5 a litany of disturbances associated with the venue. "It is a completely different, the late-night activities, underage selling of alcohol, and all sorts of problems at the end of the street," Bramlett said, noting that the area is routinely troubled by noise and littering issues.
Like spoken words into the night, other members of the community echoed these sentiments. One neighbor told WREG about the detrimental impact of the bar's activities on the neighborhood. "It’s always a mess. A lot of times they have loud music late at night, people have had to move out of the neighborhood that lived even closer – just too much noise for their baby," the neighbor said. Many agree that Canvas has become a locus of concern and frustration for those residing near it. Further details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation by the MPD.
