Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez is set to appear before a judge for the first time following his arrest on federal racketeering charges linked to a large-scale illegal gambling operation, according to News 13. Lopez was taken into custody yesterday by federal agents, and his case generated substantial concern, as the operation he's accused of protecting reportedly garnered over $21 million in illicit profits.
Moreover, the gravity of the charges was emphasized by Central Florida legal analyst Jonathan Rose who observed, "That is genuinely a big deal. So, whatever is behind this, it is a very serious allegation because they don't take the prosecution of high-level law enforcement officers lightly," according to News 13; Rose's statement highlights the seriousness of the offenses for which Lopez faces at least two charges: one count of racketeering and one count of conspiracy to commit racketeering, both first-degree felonies.
Following his arrest, Governor Ron DeSantis promptly suspended Lopez from office issuing an executive order stating "Marcos R. Lopez is hereby prohibited from performing any official act, duty, or function of public office; from receiving any pay or allowance; from being entitled to any of the emoluments or privileges of public office," as reported by WFLA. In the interim, Florida Highway Patrol Central Region Chief Christopher Blackmon has been appointed to serve as the Sheriff of Osceola County.
Attorney General James Uthmeier accused Lopez of engaging in the illegal gambling operation to receive campaign contributions and personal payments and then used the cover of his sheriff's office to protect the illicit business from law enforcement according to a press release obtained by WESH. The case, beginning in 2023, involved several law enforcement agencies in its investigation, and with the severity of the charges, has now put Lopez behind bars at the Lake County Jail without bond pending a June 30 arraignment; he will make his first appearance before a judge at 9 a.m., today.
