As Northeast Ohio faces extreme temperatures, with "feels like" conditions soaring above 100 degrees, more than 30,000 residents encountered power outages on Monday afternoon. FirstEnergy reported significant power loss across multiple areas, including 18,590 outages in Cuyahoga County, primarily affecting Lakewood, and 11,215 in Summit County, particularly in Akron and Barberton, as reported by Cleveland19.
Amid this scorching heat wave, FirstEnergy's website noted a broken pole near a substation as the cause for the Lakewood blackouts, with the company ensuring they were "working as quickly and safely as possible to get the pole replaced and customers back up and running ASAP." Despite these efforts, downtown Cleveland suffered further outages due to an early morning fire at Cleveland Public Power's Lake Road substation on Tuesday, impacting several pivotal establishments such as the Cleveland Police Headquarters and Browns Stadium. This incident, reportedly caused by an overheated battery, led to emergency repairs without a clear timeline for resolution, as detailed by Cleveland19.
The series of power outages extended beyond these incidents, with over 8,000 additional customers losing power during peak heat conditions, particularly in Cuyahoga and Summit counties. FirstEnergy is investigating the cause of these further disruptions. In Akron, a failed transformer prompted the possibility of rolling blackouts to manage the strain on the electrical system. The City of Akron has announced potential 90-minute interval blackouts, which could persist up to 12 hours, depending on system demand and repair progress. This information came from Stephanie Marsh, Akron's director of communications, in a statement obtained by News 5 Cleveland.
