Lower Manhattan became the epicenter of dissent this yesterday as more than 80 protesters were arrested following a march through the streets, standing in opposition to the Trump administration's stringent immigration policies. As reported by ABC7NY, demonstrators gathered in Foley Square before making their way to a federal immigration court, where in recent weeks, ICE has been detaining migrants. This large-scale display of protest marks New York City's iteration of the national backlash against the deportations and raids that have intensified under the current administration.

The New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who is also campaigning for mayor, condemned potential collusion between NYPD and ICE on social media. She sent a letter demanding investigation into whether information sharing was taking place, a claim the current mayor's office labeled as a cheap political ploy, as ABC7NY detailed.

Meanwhile, protesters, some of whom have a personal connection to the issue at hand, vowed to continue their demonstrations. "I think it's my obligation as a citizen to speak for those who are in the shadows, everything that's going on is just heartbreaking and it hits pretty close to home," Denisse Mejia, a demonstrator, told ABC7NY.

On the same day, at Foley Square, a group of masked protesters gathered in a show of resistance. Brooklyn City Council Member Alexa Avilés rallied the crowd, stating, "We are going to stand up and fight back with everything we have. Because if you think that this issue is not about you, you are mistaken. This issue is about you, it is about your neighbors," according to a statement obtained by AMNY. The protests continued well into the night, with demonstrators clashing with a heavily mobilized police presence, resulting in several arrests.

As tensions rose during these demonstrations, police sources confirmed that 86 individuals were taken into custody for various offenses, including assault and obstructing governmental administration, with 52 receiving criminal court summonses. More demonstrations are expected in the coming days as the city braces for continued advocacy against ICE actions.
