Community outcry follows a brutal attack on a high school student at a Palmdale concert, as a viral video captures a mob beating 17-year-old Elijah Green. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident, which took place on May 24, as a potential hate crime, following reports from family and witnesses of racial slurs used during the assault. Roneika Green, the victim’s mother, and civil rights activist Najee Ali, are calling for swift justice.
According to KTLA, the family is urging the authorities to pursue hate crime charges. The attack reportedly occurred after allegations of Elijah behaving inappropriately the previous night, which his mother denies. Instead, she contends he tripped and accidentally leaned against a woman. The video footage shows Elijah being stomped on and kicked, while onlookers are caught on audio supporting the violence and hurling racial slurs.
Elijah recounted the harrowing experience in an interview. "Every time I look at that video, it just makes me blink a little, like, wow," Elijah told FOX 11. "They're kicking dirt into my face. I'm having people on top of me, punching me down. Kicking me in the back of my head and my neck and my back." But many of those present at the concert maintained that the escalation wasn't race-related.
At a press conference, Roneika Green expressed the pain of witnessing the ruthless beating of her son. "As a mother, watching my son get nearly beaten to death by a racist mob, while no one helped him, is something I’ll never forget," Roneika told NBC Los Angeles. "He did everything he could to protect himself, but her never had a chance. My son was beaten because he’s Black. This is clearly a hate crime and I demand justice." LASD's Palmdale station underscores its seriousness in addressing hate crime allegations and has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
No arrests have been made so far, and law enforcement continues to seek information from the public. Authorities urge individuals with details on the case to contact Detective Peirson at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Palmdale Station at 661-272-2477.
