Parents, teachers, and staff, still reeling from the news of her sudden retirement following a suspension, demanded transparency from the district leadership. According to WCNC, one CMS teacher expressed their frustration during the public comment period, saying, "This is the angriest and most distrustful I have been of this district; this is inappropriate, and you all need to do better."
Brooks, who had been at the helm of Ardrey Kell since 2008, saw a suspension handed down on May 2 before her retirement was announced effective on Sunday. Missing the mark, the district’s silence on the reason behind the suspension and subsequent retirement, reports WBT, led to a public outcry for answers, which came to a head with a group of teachers staging a sick-out in protest, donning purple and holding signs along Ardrey Kell Road.
Amidst the growing discontent, the sentiment among parents was evident, as they voiced their desire for partnership and clear communication from the CMS board and superintendent. "We still have not heard from CMS about what is going on," Deborah Pupo, a parent, told the Board, a sentiment echoed by many in the dismayed school community, as reported by WCNC.
However, during the tumult of the meeting, CMS Board Vice-Chair Dee Rankin stood by the district's handling of the situation. "This is a district of integrity. This is a board of integrity. This is a superintendent and executive and cabinet team of integrity. And I know there are certain assumptions that things happened that were not above board, but I guarantee you this is a district of integrity and things were followed properly. Change is not easy, and I understand that," Rankin addressed the crowd, as reported by WBTV. Despite the claims of integrity, the school community's need for clear reasons behind the former principal's departure continues to be a lingering question mark.
Recorded as never having received any disciplinary action since starting with the district nearly 30 years ago, Brooks' unexplained suspension and retirement have left a void of uncertainty, as highlighted in the WBTV coverage. With graduation on June 17, parents and staff who showed up in support are hopeful that Brooks might make an appearance, if the circumstances permit.
