Portland’s Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood buzzed with life at the Party in the Park event hosted by Safe Blocks last month. On May 29, Earl Boyles Park transformed into a community fiesta filled with laughter, games, and local flair as over 350 people, including students from nearby Earl Boyles Elementary and Ron Russell Middle School, took part in the festivities. The celebration featured a diverse lineup of activities ranging from free face painting to live alpacas, and drew in families to experience the collaborative spirit that defines this corner of the city.

The community event, according to an announcement on the City of Portland's website, included contributions from various local businesses and organizations. Among those who participated were Mystique’s Face Painting, PBOT’s Play Streets and Vision Zero, and the Alpacas of Oregon. The organizers also extended their gratitude to Nacheaux’s, Rasia’s Ono Ice for catering to the palates of those present, and the David Douglas School District for its involvement. The festive air was, thus a direct result of the collective efforts of these community partners.

The Powellhurst-Gilbert Party in the Park signified more than just an afternoon of merrymaking—it was the kick-off for Safe Blocks' federally funded placemaking initiative aimed at engaging the community in crafting safer, more welcoming public spaces. The project seeks to enrich the neighborhood over the next three years through cultural and public programs, greening efforts, and the installation of public art.
