A prolonged standoff that unfolded on the North Freeway ended without violence when a 64-year-old woman, armed and experiencing a mental crisis, surrendered to authorities after an hours-long shutdown of the I-45, near Cypresswood Drive. According to KHOU, the event began around 1:30 p.m. yesterday and led to traffic delays on both the northbound and southbound lanes, which were reopened after the incident's peaceful resolution around 6:30 p.m. The woman earlier collided with an 18-wheeler and was later seen sitting in a lawn chair with a gun.
"The good thing is, someone's mother, grandmother is coming home tonight," HCSO Major Cedrick Collier said during a briefing. "Maybe not tonight, but she's not injured, she's not dead. We didn't have to use force to take her into custody. She can get the help she needs, and that's great. That's a win." This sentiment was expressed in KHOU's coverage, which detailed the woman's surrender and her transport to a local hospital for evaluation.
The incident demanded the expertise of negotiators from various law enforcement agencies who carefully worked to deescalate the tension, which culminated in the woman safely relinquishing her weapon. As reported by KPRC 2, authorities had also involved a family member in their attempt to resolve the standoff peacefully. "I am greatly appreciative of the community for their patience and this traffic nightmare that occurred," Major Collier acknowledged in a press conference.
Relief was widespread as the resolution allowed for the lanes to gradually reopen, easing the congestion that had impacted drivers throughout the afternoon. "We had to shut down the freeway in both directions. Thank the public so much for your patience and thank you all for spreading the word, asking the public to stay out of the area while we conduct business," Major Collier told KPRC 2. The captured footage of the woman laying down her gun, and hugging negotiators before being detained reflected the intense emotions, that had gripped all those involved in the standoff.
