Peachtree City’s well-known alligator, Flat Creek Floyd, died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 74 early Friday morning, according to the Peachtree City Police Department. The driver left the scene, and Floyd was found critically injured. After assessing his condition, authorities determined he could not be saved and euthanized him.
FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Floyd had lived in the area for over a decade, often seen near neighborhoods, shopping centers, and a retirement community. Though his presence initially raised concerns, he later became familiar to residents. Wildlife expert Jason Clark from Southeastern Reptile Rescue previously advocated for allowing Floyd to remain in the area, promoting public education over removal.
Following the incident, Clark measured Floyd at 11 feet, 9 inches long and estimated his weight between 400 to 500 pounds. He was believed to be between 40 and 50 years old, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The Peachtree City Police Department posted a tribute on Facebook and noted that Floyd was buried behind their facility. As reported by Atlanta News First, the department is asking for donations to the Fayette County Animal Shelter in Floyd’s memory.
