In a bid to enhance street safety, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has introduced new traffic-calming measures on Lehigh Avenue, an area known for its hazardous traffic conditions. According to a social media post by the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems, this initiative is part of the broader Vision Zero strategy, which aims to address and mitigate the risks present on the High Injury Network (HIN) corridors by 2030.
Community engagement plays a critical role in shaping such projects, to which end, PennDOT is making a concerted effort to include public input through the Vision Zero Action Plan Survey. The survey is open until Monday, June 30, providing locals a platform to voice their concerns and, suggestions regarding the ongoing and future road safety enhancements. In a recent social media update, the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems encouraged participation stating, "Vision Zero is committed to programming safety on every mile of the High Injury Network by 2030. Help us plan more projects like this by completing the Vision Zero Action Plan Survey."
Lehigh Avenue, a stretch notoriously fraught with accidents, is part of a targeted effort to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. These zones, which are identified based on data indicating high incidences of crashes, are receiving focused attention from city planners and engineers. While the specifics of the new traffic calming measures have not been detailed in the public posts, such measures typically include speed bumps, road narrowings, better signage, and enhanced crosswalks, all aimed at slowing down traffic and increasing pedestrian safety.
The Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems and PennDOT hope that these measures will significantly lower the chances of accidents, and create a more secure environment for all travelers, be they on foot, bicycle, or in vehicles. They reiterate the underlying goal of Vision Zero, that no loss of life on the roads is acceptable, and each step taken toward this end is a stride towards a safer community for the citizens of Pennsylvania.
