Minneapolis is gearing up for a bustling couple of weeks filled with city-wide events that will inevitably lead to numerous road closures and an increased police presence. City officials are emphasizing the need for early travel planning and the consideration of alternative modes of transportation to maneuver through the City of Lakes.
During the weekend of June 27-29, the Twin Cities Pride events will cause significant street closures throughout downtown Minneapolis, specifically Hennepin Avenue which will be blocked from Washington Avenue to 16th Street North starting at 7 a.m., along with Third Street and portions of Second Avenue South according to a recent update by City of Minneapolis news; for those wanting to join the celebration, Metro Transit is offering free ride passes that can be downloaded from the Pride website.
The following holiday weekend, from July 4-6, will not fall short on activities either, with the Minneapolis Convention Center hosting the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board putting on their "Red, White & BOOM!" fireworks show along the riverfront, as mentioned on the City website. Road closures will affect Main Street, West River Parkway, and other,s while limited access will be experienced on 2nd Street South and Hennepin Avenue across the river because the city wants everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities, yet it’s still important to stay aware of the changes to traffic patterns.
Sports fans are in for a treat with consecutive games hosted by the Minnesota Lynx at the Target Center and a series between the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays at Target Field, meanwhile, the Taste of Minnesota will tantalize taste buds across downtown with its offerings of food, culture, and music on July 5 and 6. Streets such as 3rd Street South and Marquette Avenue South will be shut down to accommodate the influx of festival-goers who can also benefit from Metro Transit's free ride initiative during the event, these closures and offerings highlight the city's dedication to providing accessible celebration options while handling the logistical challenges presented by such large-scale gatherings.
As these events highlight the vibrant community and provide numerous entertainment options, the city wants to make sure that residents and visitors alike have the smoothest experience possible. For more detailed information about travel disruptions and alternate transportation options, including transit, parking, scooter, and bike share, individuals are encouraged to visit the Getting Around page on the Minneapolis city website and consider participating in the "As You Go Mpls" campaign, which promotes healthier and more stress-free ways to navigate the city during these packed events.
