Plymouth Police officers rescued an unconscious kayaker near the Long Pond boat ramp. Officers Thomas Foley, Josh Smith, and Eric Decelle responded to a distress call, according to a Facebook post by the Plymouth Police Department.
When they arrived, Officers Foley and Smith saw an empty kayak with a trolling motor and what initially appeared to be a buoy. It was soon identified as an unconscious man floating face down in the water. Officer Smith put on a life jacket and entered the water, using the drifting kayak to get closer to the victim. Officer Foley followed in a canoe to assist, as Smith began to tire.
Officer Smith kept the man’s head above water while supporting both himself and the victim until the Plymouth Fire Department arrived with a rescue boat. The man, who had no pulse at the time, was brought to shore where EMS continued life-saving efforts. He was later transported to BID Plymouth, where he regained a pulse and began breathing on his own.
Officer Smith was also taken to the hospital for treatment due to prolonged exposure to the cold water, which was around 50 degrees. He was later released.
