Last week, the long-anticipated roadworks on NE 82nd Avenue in Portland kicked off, with contractors for Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) having completed paving on the west side curb lane between NE Beech and Fremont streets. The ongoing improvement efforts are part of what PBOT is calling the 82nd Avenue Major Maintenance project, aimed at alleviating the troubles of a road weary from years of cracking and weather damage. In a social media post, PBOT announced the milestone and set sights on the east side curb this week.
The necessity for renewal is stark; the pavement on NE/SE 82nd Avenue has been wearied down by persistent cracking and water infiltration that goes deep below the surface. This week's work on the east side hopes to remedy these lingering issues. However, this spate of construction will inevitably lead to traffic interruptions, with one lane in each direction maintained but delays expected—particularly during peak commute hours. Motorists are beseeched to exercise caution and patience as crews work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
The journey towards a renewed 82nd Avenue doesn't end here. Come mid-June, the focus will shift further down the road to a section between NE Siskiyou and Russell streets, continuing the transformative work. These incremental steps form part of a larger scheme that's slated to extend through the summers of 2025 and 2026. It's a long road, literally and metaphorically, towards a smoother commute and a strengthened infrastructure.
As road users navigate the construction zones, they're implored to adhere to the guidance of flaggers and signage. PBOT expressed gratitude for the public's understanding, "Thank you for your patience as we Build a Better 82nd."
