A series of disruptions hit Avondale Estates this Tuesday as power outages and downed trees caused significant inconvenience and temporary closures, including City Hall. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that at 10:15 a.m., 175 customers were without power near Kensington Road and Stratford Road, and another 53 were in the dark near Covington Road and Windsor Trace.
The power outage, which is yet to have its cause disclosed to the public, led to the closure of the city's administrative heartbeat, with a handwritten sign pinned to City Hall's door foreshadowing the pause in public services until the issue was rectified, and although Georgia Power forecasted power restoration by 3 p.m., efforts seemed to be ongoing; furthermore, the outage affected traffic lights, throwing a wrench into the city's vehicular flow. Officials swiftly responded by urging drivers to treat non-functional traffic lights as a four-way stop, hoping to maintain safety and order amid the unexpected upheaval, as per The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Compounding the city's strained day, two large oaks took to the ground on Covington Highway near American Legion Post 66, inspiring a necessary detour as eastbound traffic was rerouted via Berkley Road to Kensington Road to Covington Highway, and westbound traffic was diverted on Stratford Road to South Avondale Plaza to North Avondale Road. The fallen oaks, reportedly noticed by a city police officer at 5:14 a.m., caused no crashes, yet resulted in disruption to MARTA services, with eastbound Avondale trains boarding in unconventional places on the platform and comparable adjustments occurring at Kensington station.
Power was fully restored by 4 p.m. after an outage that initially affected about 700 customers, according to a city spokesperson. Georgia Power worked quickly to resolve the issue, bringing all customers back online. While service is back to normal, officials continue to urge caution and warn residents to avoid downed power lines for safety.
