In a move to mitigate the growing issue of displacement in Rainier Beach, Councilmember Mark Solomon of District 2 in collaboration with the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is hosting an Anti-Displacement Resource Fair. This event, which was announced in a recent post on the Front Porch, aims to provide information and resources to those in vulnerable housing situations.
The fair is scheduled for June 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rainier Beach Community Center, located at 8825 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118, Seattle residents who are struggling with housing costs, or fear displacement from their neighborhoods, are encouraged to attend. Participants can, RSVP online to confirm their attendance, as per the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
Several City departments and non-profit organizations will be present to offer a range of support services tailored to aid residents in maintaining their homes and community ties. Among the services highlighted, rental assistance and utility discount programs stand out as key offerings to those who are grappling with the cost of living in an ever-changing city landscape.
Support extends to home repair assistance, homeownership resources and more. Notable among the tabling partners are Seattle Office of Housing, Urban League, and Habitat for Humanity. The event will be community-friendly, providing light refreshments and activities for children. Interpretation services will be available in Oromo, Somali, and Vietnamese to ensure the accessibility of information to diversely-linguistic attendees.
The gathering isn't merely a one-off; it’s a reflection of a city's effort to actively engage with its residents and address the systemic pressures that contribute to displacement.
