A wildfire designated the Lake Fire, erupted on Saturday near Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County, prompting evacuations. Reported by KTLA, the blaze began before 4:00 p.m. and expanded rapidly from 70 acres to 478 acres by 8 p.m., igniting concerns over further spread.
As the fire escalated, officials warned that it had the potential to consume up to 1,000 acres. Evacuation orders were swiftly implemented for areas south of Highway 138 from Highway 173 to Summit Valley Road due to the threat to structures and visibility concerns. According to FOX LA, portions of Highway 138 from Old Mill to Interstate 15, and Highway 173 at Highway 138, were closed.
As the incident unfolded, CBS Los Angeles noted that emergency crews described the wildfire's progression as having a "dangerous rate of spread" through heavy brush. The urgency of the situation prompted the deployment of both air and ground firefighting resources to attempt containment and to protect nearby communities.
An evacuation warning was also issued for areas north of Highways 138 and 173, from Summit Valley Road to Arrowhead Lake Road. Authorities advised residents to "Be prepared to leave at a moment's notice," a sentiment echoed by a statement obtained by KTLA from CAL FIRE, which highlighted the challenging weather conditions of gusty south winds and low humidity. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and investigations continue as teams work towards controlling the blaze.
