
On May 13, in the vicinity of North 16th Street, an officer-involved shooting sent shockwaves through Sacramento. The Sacramento Police Department has now released audio and video materials to shed light on the circumstances of that fateful encounter.
Responding to a distressing call, officers were alerted to a man flaunting a firearm in public. Described as waving a handgun and pointing it menacingly at passerby, the situation escalated quickly, with officers arriving shortly after the second plea for help caught their urgency. Despite their efforts, the duties given by the officers to de-escalate were ignored.
The released narrated video starts with the initial police response and culminates in the officers administering emergency medical aid to the wounded suspect. In it, the officers can be seen trying to negotiate with the man, who ultimately drew what appeared to be a firearm on them. The Sacramento Police Department's statement emphasized that all faces and sensitive information have been blurred out, with audio redactions noted by segments of muted sound as part of their commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
After being commanded repeatedly to not reach for his weapon, and to move onto the sidewalk, the suspect, whose actions continued to advance toward the officers. Begging them to shoot, three officers discharged their weapons as the suspect drew the object from his pocket. Struck by the gunfire, the suspect was later found to be armed with an imitation firearm. Following the shooting, the officers quickly transitioned to render aid.
The man was hospitalized with serious injuries but survived, leading to his arrest. Facing charges including brandishing an imitation firearm and resisting arrest, his brush with law enforcement takes on new hues now that the weapon in question has been confirmed as a fake. The Sacramento Police Department has clarified that an extensive investigation of this incident is underway, led by several divisions within the department and monitored by both the Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
In line with city and state policy, specifically falling under City Council’s policy on Police Use of Force and SB 1421, all video and audio materials related to the incident will be made public within 30 days.
