A tragic incident unfolded at a Sacramento Regional Transit bus station in Rancho Cordova, where a teenager lost his life after being stabbed by a SacRT employee, reported the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The altercation occurred at the Mather Fields/Mills Transit Center located on 10191 Mills Station Road, as described in a Sheriff's Office statement provided to ABC10.
The series of events began when a SacRT ambassador, whose role typically mirrors that of a security guard, confronted a 16-year-old boy and a girl for vaping on a bus leading to their departure from the vehicle at the Mills Station Road stop where multiple calls about the stabbing were later received by authorities and while it's unclear whether they disembarked voluntarily or were ejected from the bus, what followed was a fight that also involved the girl and during which the fatal stabbing of the boy occurred, the Sheriff's Office said. The employee, who has been detained but not formally arrested as of yet, was found carrying a knife, which is against SacRT policy prohibiting ambassadors from carrying weapons as they are instead supported by police officers or county deputies who, in this case, were not present at the time of the incident.
Sacramento Regional Transit has since issued a statement on the matter, asserting that the stabbing ensued in self-defense after an attack by the teens, "The ongoing investigation indicates that the employee was attacked by the two teens, which led to a stabbing in self defense," conveyed SacRT in information acquired by KCRA 3. The agency emphasized its commitment to rider and employee safety and pledged to assist law enforcement with the investigation. SacRT further clarified that their policy does not sanction ambassadors to carry knives and underscored their training in de-escalation and customer service.
As the sheriff's office wraps up their investigation, which has yet to lead to formal charges, they plan to submit their findings to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office for review to determine potential charges with no arrests having been made as of Friday; meanwhile, the identity of the young victim has not been shared publicly.
