The Saint Paul Police Department has rolled out its summer Trades Academy Program, designed to offer high school students paid summer internships and a taste of various trades. According to a social media post by the department, the program this year includes 22 students and aims to equip them with valuable life skills and potential career paths.
The initiative received a philanthropic boost with a contribution from local benefactor Tony Scheuerman, ensuring that all participants were fitted with work boots for their hands-on training sessions, addressing not just the training but also the practical necessities of the trade environment. Sergeant Toy Vixayvong and Officer Jim Lee were the bearers of goodwill, hand-delivering the boots to the students, an act reflecting community support and the nurturing of budding talent within the workforce, and their mornings came with a side of leather-and-rubber optimism.
Rooted in community engagement and skill development, the Trades Academy offers these young aspirants a unique blend of educational and on-the-job experiences in trades that are essential to the community's infrastructure. The partnership between local law enforcement and education could prove to be a blueprint for encouraging more diverse and robust workforce development programs across different sectors.
As the program progresses through the summer, the Saint Paul Police Department plans to keep the public abreast of the academy’s developments and successes, possibly showcasing transformations from tentative students to confident beginners in skilled labor the summer Trades Academy has woven a narrative of opportunity and growth, a testament to the city's investment in its youth and the community's belief that every student should have the chance to lace up and step forward into a future built with their own hands. Stay tuned for more updates, because the story of these 22 pioneering students is only just beginning.
