The City of San Antonio is on the lookout for a few good men and women who know a thing or two about buildings and fire safety. They've thrown open the application process for spots on their Building-Related and Fire Codes Appeals and Advisory Board (BRFCAAB) and those in the know have until August 1, 2025, to throw their hat in the ring, as per an announcement published on the city’s official website.
Key to maintaining a cross-section of expertise, the city is calling specifically for individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, including structural, fire protection, electrical, and mechanical engineers, architects, and various contractor specialists. While having their backgrounds, both commercial and residential building owners or representatives, along with managing agents, are also being asked if they're up for joining the board.
What does this board do, you may ask? The BRFCAAB doesn't exactly gather for a social tea. They get down to business, hearing out appeals from property owners in disagreement with decisions handed down by the City Building Official or Fire Chief related to residential and commercial permits. The board functions as a first line of review, offering members an opportunity to plead their case and present additional facts beyond what might have initially been considered.
Don't expect weekly meetings and a coffee klatch, though. The BRFCAAB convenes roughly once per quarter, or when there's a particular need to go over building codes for adoption or to hear a variance or appeal. For those with a knack for rules and regs who might be interested in applying, you can reach out for application assistance by calling 210-207-7253 or using the contact form, as suggested by the Development Services' announcement.
