Last week, authorities in San Bernardino County engaged in a substantial crackdown on crime, apprehending 11 individuals and seizing 23 firearms, some methamphetamine, and cocaine. This activity was part of "Operation Consequences," a law enforcement effort targeting gang members and individuals barred from owning guns, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. As reported by KTLA, the raids took place at various locations across the county, including in Barstow, Rialto, Landers, San Bernardino, and Highland, between June 9 and June 15.
The operation's haul included three ghost guns, unserialized and untraceable firearms, which add an encrypted layer to the struggle against illegal weapons. During investigations, 23 firearms were seized, three of which were ghost guns. Additionally, suspected methamphetamine and cocaine were located and confiscated. Seven felony arrests and four misdemeanour arrests were made throughout this period. Noteworthy is the application of Proposition 36—passed last November—which applied to two of the arrests, elevating the penalties for drug and theft crimes in California.
As detailed in a press release published by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, the intensive week saw law enforcement collaborate with various agencies, including local police departments, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and federal agencies like Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). This was the result of funding authorized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to ramp up crime suppression focused on quality-of-life issues.
Proposition 36, known as "The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act," reformed laws from Proposition 47, which were seen as contributing to increases in homelessness, drug addiction, and theft. This new proposition adds weight to the consequences faced by individuals apprehended during "Operation Consequences." According to the Sheriff’s Department, "These new charges can carry enhanced sentencing, as well as prevent offenders from being cite released prior to their court appearance."
Looking ahead, "Operation Consequences" is an ongoing initiative set to continue over the coming months with the clear intent to curb violent crime, disrupt criminal organizations, and address illegal firearms possession and trafficking. The multi-agency collaboration underscores a sustained commitment to tackling the intersecting issues of illegal gun ownership, gang activity, and drug-related crimes in the region.
